dchapmanDear Sir,

I have been searching the web for images and information on the Hogwarts Castle used in Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone. I would like to obtain floor plans of the castle, layout of the grounds, and detailed images of the exterior of the Hogwarts. I am sure the idea for Hogwarts was created from either one or more existing castles. I want to build a model of Hogwarts to use in our media center. I not building it to scale, but would like to obtain enough detail information to make the model believable. I would appreciate your help in my quest. Thank you for your time. I look forward to your reply.

ipfloi didn't see the movie

but i know in the film they used alnwick castle in northumberland, info on this castle you can find at
http://www.alnwickcastle.com/
http://www.castlegate.net/CASTLES/alnwick/

Peter EsserO, I see, Alnwick castle - most probably the set for the outdoor scenes in the grounds of Hogwards.

Here is another quite useful site for you:
http://www.historic-uk.com/DestinationsUK/HarryPotter.htm

But I am sure that the outer appearance of hogwards is a mere fantasy product. So you may feel free to create your own fantasy-castle, if you like to.

Another inspiration I can give you are the so-called "carceri", architectural fictions made by an italian painter - and, I think, architect - Piranesi. I had to remember them when I saw the scenes with moving stairways.
http://web.ionsys.com/~treb/images/carceri.jpg

So I don’t believe there exists a real floor print - unless you use the "marauders map" (HP vol. 3), even Dumbledore doesn’t know every room …

GordonProbably a question better suited to 'In The Movies'.
A full list of loactions for the film can be found at, http://us.imdb.com/Locations?0241527
and are listed as follows

Alnwick Castle, Alnwick, Northumberland, England, UK
(Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: broomstick flying lessons)

Australian High Commission, London, England, UK
(Gringotts Bank)

Black Park, Iver, Buckinghamshire, England, UK

Bodleian Library, Oxford, England, UK

Christ Church College, Oxford, England, UK

Divinity School, Bodleian Library, Oxford, England, UK
(Hogwarts School, Sanatorium Scenes)

Duke Humfrey's Library, Oxford, England, UK
(Hogwarts School, Library Scenes)

Durham Cathedral, County Durham, England, UK

Glen Nevis, Fort William, Scotland, UK

Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England, UK
(Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: exterior scenes)

Goathland, North Yorkshire, England, UK
(Hogsmead station)

Harrow School, Harrow, London, England, UK

Kings Cross Station, London, England, UK
(Platform 9¾)

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire, England, UK

Leadenhall Market, London, England, UK

London Zoo, Regent's Park, London, England, UK

Martins Heron, Bracknell, Berkshire, England, UK
(Privet Drive, Harry's aunt and uncle's house)

West Highland Railway Line, Scotland, UK
(Train Journey to Hogwarts)

You are unlikely to find a floorplan that matches the Hogwarts in the film, because Hogwarts was 'constructed' from bits and pieces of lots of different places to match the scenes set by the books.

LevanFor those interested in making a model of "Hogwarts Castle" there's an excellent illustrated article in the following magazine:

Model Rail (Issue 43 May 2002).
The magazine can be contacted in the UK on 01733 264666

The model is contructed using cardboard, plastic sheet, "Pringles" tubes and Metcalfe Models stone effect cardboard. The article has photographs and diagrams showing how to perform each stage of the construction.
